who is Macca
Macca drives a triple road train Perth to Adelaide and back, has done for 19 years, knows every roadhouse, every dip, every spot where the kangaroos are “organised”. He doesn’t want his full name on here because “the company has a policy” and also because “the Bureau reads this site, don’t kid yourself”. fair.
He emailed us the photo and a 4 page account typed on what I think was a Nokia. I have cleaned up the spelling but NOT the capitals because the capitals are load bearing.
what happened
Friday 19 Jan 2001, 11:40pm, eastbound, about 90 clicks past Eucla. Flat as a table out there, no lights for a hundred k’s in any direction except the roadhouse behind him and that’s it.
Macca: “THREE LIGHTS. WHITE. IN A TRIANGLE. NOT MOVING. NOT A PLANE BECAUSE PLANES MOVE. NOT A STAR BECAUSE STARS DON’T SIT IN A TRIANGLE LIKE THAT AND ALSO STARS DON’T HAVE A SHAPE BETWEEN THEM. THERE WAS A SHAPE BETWEEN THEM. BLACKER THAN THE SKY. I KNOW WHAT THE SKY LOOKS LIKE OUT THERE I LOOK AT IT TWELVE HOURS A DAY.”
He says it sat there off his left shoulder for FORTY MINUTES. He did 70 k’s in that time. It didn’t get closer, didn’t get further, didn’t change angle. “LIKE IT WAS ON A STRING TIED TO THE PRIME MOVER.”
Then at about 12:20 “IT MOVED. ALL AT ONCE. NO RUN UP. LIKE IT REMEMBERED SOMETHING. ONE SECOND THERE NEXT SECOND IT WAS A DOT GOING NORTH AND THEN NOTHING.”
He pulled over and had a smoke and “A BIT OF A THINK” and then drove to Ceduna and didn’t sleep.
Dr Faraday’s analysis
Lyle had the photo for a week. He did the 212 enhancements. Findings:
- “Three luminous sources in an equilateral arrangement” (a triangle)
- “A region of reduced luminosity between them” (the black bit)
- “Apparent size, if at 2 km, approximately 300 metres across. If at 200 m, approximately 30 metres. If at 2 m, approximately 30 centimetres, but it would have to have been inside the cab.”
- 11 Faraday Units
- “Consistent with the well known black triangle craft reported over Belgium in 1989-90, allowing for the fact that this one is in Australia and therefore upside down”
the roadhouse thing
obviously Keith wrote in. Keith always writes in. Keith’s letter says the three lights were the Eucla roadhouse and its two fuel bowsers “receding at a constant angle due to the curvature of the highway” and that they “moved all at once” when the road bent.
Macca’s reply, which I am printing in full because he asked me to and because it’s the best email we’ve ever got:
I HAVE DRIVEN PAST THAT ROADHOUSE FOUR HUNDRED TIMES. FOUR HUNDRED. IT HAS NEVER FOLLOWED ME BEFORE. IT WAS BEHIND ME. THE LIGHTS WERE BESIDE ME. THE ROADHOUSE DOES NOT HAVE A BLACK TRIANGLE SHAPE BETWEEN ITS BOWSERS, KEITH, IT HAS A PIE WARMER. AND THE ROAD DOESN’T BEND THERE. THERE’S A 146 KM STRAIGHT. IT’S FAMOUS. IT’S ON A SIGN. HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE NULLARBOR KEITH. HAVE YOU BEEN ANYWHERE.

Warren wanted to file this CONFIRMED but Noreen pointed out we have one photo, one witness, and the witness was 19 hours into a shift. So it’s UNVERIFIED BUT TRUE, which is the status we use when we know it’s real but can’t prove it to people who don’t want to know.
A word from management
I have no view on the triangle. I have a view on a man driving a 50-metre road train for 40 minutes while staring out the side window at the sky, and the view is that the triangle is the least of it. — Noreen

Macca has since emailed again to say he’s “SEEN IT TWICE MORE, SAME SPOT, SAME TIME, IT’S WAITING FOR ME” and that he’s “GOING TO STOP NEXT TIME AND HAVE IT OUT WITH IT”. We’ve asked him not to. We’ve also asked him to take a better camera. He says “THE CAMERA ISN’T THE PROBLEM SHANE, THE TRIANGLE IS THE PROBLEM.”
