The photographs
Every image below was captured on equipment available to a grazier, a TV repairman or a ten-year-old with a disposable camera, in conditions the sceptics describe as "poor" and we describe as "night". Each has been analysed by Dr Faraday. Each has been requested by the Men in Beige. Each remains online.
On image quality
People ask why, in thirty years, the Collective has never produced a sharp photograph. The answer is simple: they know when you have a good camera. Every clear night, every tripod, every full battery: nothing. Hand-held Panasonic in the rain at 2 am with a dog on the lead: craft. Draw your own conclusions.
CONFIRMED14 March 1994, 2:47 am · Top Paddock, Boolaroo Downs
Frame 00:02:47:12 from the original tape. The disc, the beam, and the unmistakable outline of a Droughtmaster cow being lifted "like a sock out of a dryer".
Photo: Warren Doolan (Panasonic VHS-C, hand held, raining).FARADAY ANALYSIS: Dr Faraday enhanced the frame 212 times. The cow became clearer. The craft became clearer. The rain became, somehow, wetter.
CONFIRMED2 November 1997, dusk · Wandoona grain receival depot
A classic lenticular craft hovering at an estimated altitude of "higher than the silo". Note the port-side light, which Dr Faraday says is a light.
Photo: Shane Doolan, aged 10, disposable camera.FARADAY ANALYSIS: The Bureau of Meteorology said "lenticular cloud". The cloud had a landing light.
UNVERIFIED BUT TRUE19 January 2001, 11:40 pm · Nullarbor Plain, east of Eucla
Three lights in formation that did not move for forty minutes, then moved "all at once, like it remembered something".
Photo: A truck driver who wishes to be known only as "Macca".FARADAY ANALYSIS: Keith Rowbotham suggested the lights were a roadhouse. Macca has driven past that roadhouse 400 times and "it has never followed me before".
CONFIRMED13 March 1997 (the Phoenix Lights were the same night, draw your own conclusions) · From the Royal Hotel beer garden
A string of amber orbs over the town in a shallow arc, visible for twenty minutes, during which the raffle was suspended.
Photo: Eleven patrons, one camera.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Flares, said the RAAF. "We know what flares look like," said Warren, "we live here."
CONFIRMED28 August 2004, morning · Hennessy’s wheat, south of Wandoona
A 60-metre formation appearing overnight in standing wheat. Dr Faraday’s structural reading: "a cow, from above, worried".
Photo: Dr Faraday, from the top of the silo, with a kite.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Noreen’s structural reading: "two blokes with a plank and a rope." The plank was never found.
CONFIRMED6 June 1999, 3:12 am · Mangan residence, Wandoona
A domed head and two large dark eyes at the laundry window. Cheryl identified the being as Gary, "from the posture".
Photo: Cheryl Mangan, Polaroid, through flyscreen.FARADAY ANALYSIS: The flash reflected off the flyscreen, which the sceptics say explains the glare. It does not explain the posture.
CONFIRMED15 March 1994, 10:05 am · Front gate, Boolaroo Downs
Two men in beige slacks beside a white Commodore, thirty-one hours after Beryl was taken. They asked for "the tape". They left a pamphlet about drought assistance.
Photo: Noreen Doolan, from the kitchen, "to show the insurance".FARADAY ANALYSIS: Number plates have been obscured by the Collective out of an abundance of caution, and because the camera was a Kodak Instamatic.
CONFIRMED22 February 2002 · Wandoona District Hospital (radiology, Tuesdays)
A 3 mm metallic object behind the left ear. The radiologist wrote "artefact". Cheryl wrote "ARTEFACT OF WHAT, DARREN".
Photo: Clinical imaging, obtained by Cheryl "by asking".FARADAY ANALYSIS: The object emits no signal that any instrument the Collective owns can detect, which is consistent with advanced shielding and with it being a staple.
DEVELOPING3 April 1995, 7:30 am · Top Paddock, Boolaroo Downs
A cow found at rest inside a 9-metre circle of scorched grass. No tracks, no blood, no footprints, no receipt. The cow was later found to be asleep.
Photo: Warren Doolan.FARADAY ANALYSIS: The grass has never grown back, except where Noreen put the sprinkler, which Warren considers a separate anomaly.
UNVERIFIED BUT TRUE11 October 1996, 2 pm · Kennedy Developmental Road
A metallic disc in clear daylight with a central dome and what appear to be rivets. Dr Faraday estimates the diameter at 40 metres or, if it was closer, 40 centimetres.
Photo: Dr Lyle Faraday, from the passenger seat.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Keith Rowbotham has written to say it is a hubcap from a 1984 Ford Falcon. Dr Faraday has written back to ask how he knows the make.
LEAKED8 August 2008, 9:50 pm · "Approximately" near Alice Springs
A single bright object stationary above the radomes at the Joint Defence Facility, which Pete describes as "the loading bay".
Photo: Pine Gap Pete, "from the car park".FARADAY ANALYSIS: The Collective has been asked by two separate agencies to remove this image. The Collective has instead enlarged it.
DEVELOPING24 December 2003, 11:58 pm · Kitchen, Boolaroo Downs
A luminous orb above the Christmas table, captured moments before it "went through the ceiling and into the roof space where it is probably still is".
Photo: Shane Doolan.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Noreen says it is dust on the lens. Dr Faraday says dust does not hover. Noreen says that is exactly what dust does.
CONFIRMED17 May 2012, afternoon · Over the Big Dam
A lenticular "cloud" with a hard edge and a row of lights along the underside, holding position against a 30 km/h westerly.
Photo: Warren Doolan.FARADAY ANALYSIS: The Bureau said "cloud". The Collective said "cloud with lights". The Bureau stopped replying, which the Collective has logged as a concession.
LEAKED2 July 2015, 1:15 am · Undisclosed, "near Amberley"
A large hangar door open a crack, with a green glow and a silhouette described by the submitter as "about cow sized".
Photo: Anonymous, posted to the guestbook.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Dr Faraday measures the glow at 14 Faraday Units, which is "a lot of Faraday Units".
CONFIRMEDChristmas 1999 · Mangan residence
Cheryl with Jaxon, aged two. Cheryl points to the glow around the child as evidence of hybrid vitality. Jaxon, now 24, has asked for the photo to be taken down. Request noted.
Photo: Cheryl’s mother, who "didn’t see anything unusual".FARADAY ANALYSIS: The glow is consistent with a 1999 Polaroid flash in a room with a lot of tinsel. It is also consistent with being a hybrid. These are not mutually exclusive.
CONFIRMED30 September 1998, 10 pm · Boulia–Winton road
Two amber orbs pacing the vehicle for 11 km at a constant distance. When the ute stopped, they stopped. When Cheryl waved, "one of them sort of nodded".
Photo: Cheryl Mangan, from the back of a ute.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Official explanation: refracted headlights from a vehicle below the horizon. Cheryl’s explanation: Gary, checking in.
CONFIRMED19 January 1996 · Reed bed, Big Dam, Boolaroo Downs
A perfectly circular flattening of the reeds, 9 metres across, swirled clockwise. Identical in every respect to the 1966 Tully saucer nest, "which tells you they have a type".
Photo: Warren Doolan.FARADAY ANALYSIS: Noreen notes that the cattle stand in the dam to cool off and "go round and round". Warren notes that cattle do not go round clockwise.
CONFIRMED14 March 2014, 2:47 am (twentieth anniversary) · Big Dam, Boolaroo Downs
A column of light descending to the water surface on the exact anniversary, to the minute, of Beryl’s abduction. "They came back. They were looking for her too."
Photo: Warren Doolan, on vigil.FARADAY ANALYSIS: A vehicle was also seen on the Wandoona road at the time. Senior Constable Taggart was asked whether it was him. He declined to comment, which tells you everything.
Chain of custody
Originals are held in a Tupperware container in a location known to Warren, Noreen (since 2009) and, the Collective suspects, the Bureau. Copies exist on VHS, DVD, two USB sticks (one missing) and Shane's phone. Requests for originals from any person in beige will be refused. Requests from Beryl will be considered.
